(An Introduction to the) ADA - Department of Justice - "The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, programs
and services provided by state and local governments, goods and services provided by
private companies, and in commercial facilities.
The ADA was signed into law on July 26, 1990. It contains requirements for new construction, for alterations or renovations to buildings and facilities, and for improving access to existing facilities of private companies providing goods or services to the public. It also requires that State and local governments provide access to programs offered to the public. The ADA also covers effective communication with people with disabilities, eligibility criteria that may restrict or prevent access, and requires reasonable modifications of policies and practices that may be discriminatory.
The ADA gives the Department of Justice (DOJ) authority to issue regulations for title II and III of the ADA and to provide technical assistance and enforcement. The Department also has authority to certify that a State or local accessibility code is equivalent to the ADA's requirements for new construction and alterations."

(Preparing for the) Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - Spragins, Ellyn E.: "Cynics call the Americans with disabilities act (ADA) a lifetime employment contract for lawyers and
consultants. Both groups are braying about how woefully unprepared most companies are to cope with this
far-reaching statute, how much must be done, and how costly it will be.
The truth is, it isn't that hard to comply with the act or employ the disabled. John Cannata, president of SBM
Maintenance Contractors, a $5-million janitorial-service company in Villa Park, Ill., has hired some 75
handicapped people -- 20% of his work force -- over the past few years. "We treat them exactly the same as we
treat other workers," he says.
The law, signed by President Bush in July 1990, prohibits discrimination against the disabled in employment, public accommodations, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications. The act's greatest impact on businesses will be in its employment provision. Any company with more than 15 employees will have to review its recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and promotion practices to rid them of bias against the disabled. Here are some things those employers must do for their companies to be in compliance..."

Disability
Discrimination in Workplace - "Despite increased sensitivity to physical and mental disabilities, many of America's workers find themselves to be victims
of employment discrimination due to their disability. The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law which
prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of a "qualified" disability. Employees living with a physical disability
have the protection of federal law, not to give them preferential treatment, but to level the playing field. With the
protection of the ADA, a worker who, despite a disability, is able to perform the essential functions of his job, is entitled to
reasonable accommodation from the employer, if needed. If you feel that you have been a victim of disability
discrimination, it is important that you know your legal rights, and the actions you must take to prevent loss of your right
to a remedy."

world finally, united in strength and commited in purpose, decided to set up an
example of a self-help organisation of the disabled, by the disabled and for the
disabled, so as to achieve a "VOICE OF OUR OWN"-"VOX NOSTRA".
To this purpose, a small group of disabled people in Singapore, with the help of about 100 volunteers, became engaged in a battle against time, obstacles, lack of funds,to mention only a few problems...to bring to fruition an idea fathered in Winnipeg, Canada some months earlier in 1980 by 12 people and 300 supporters with disability. With no office, no organisational structure and no experience, we toiled from our homes and borrowed premises to midwife the birth of DISABLED PEOPLES' INTERNATIONAL (DPI) in Singapore on 4th December 1981. We accomplished in 9 months what many sceptics said was impossible. The example has since opened the eyes of millions around the world. It has also resulted in the formation of over 100 DPI affiliates in more than 90 countries to date. In pride and not immodesty, we claim the Disabled Peoples' International by right and place of birth as a citizen of our beloved country."

R.S.I. Page - "As more and more educational work involves using computers, students and

to the hands and arms resulting from the use of computer keyboards and
mice. This can be a serious and very painful condition that is far easier to
prevent than to cure once contracted, and can occur even in young
physically fit individuals. It is not uncommon for people to have to leave
computer-dependent careers as a result, or even to be permanentlydisabled and unable to perform tasks such as driving or dressing
themselves.
I've faced this problem myself since March of 1994, and many friends are also affected to varying degrees. I am not a health care professional, but I hope on this page to provide a very brief introduction to RSI for the benefit of students who may not be aware of the potential for a life-altering injury. It includes book references and links to Internet resources that have been helpful in educating me about this. Don't hesitate to get in touch by e-mail, but because I have to limit my own computer use, please take the time to consult the entire page and the listed materials at length first. -Paul Marxhausen."

Tips for negotiating
cases with DOJ - "More and more often, in-house counsel for businesses, public entities and non-profits are receiving a call from
Washington, D.C. that they hoped would never come, announcing that the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating
their client for violations of the public access provisions (Titles II or III) of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Sometimes
the triggering event is a complaint from a customer, a member of the public, or an advocacy group. It could be a result of
audits of blueprints done by DOJ's contractors. Counsel may know or suspect the source, but in many cases the client will
not know, and DOJ will seldom say how the complaint arose.
Successfully handling ADA investigations conducted by the DOJ, and resolving these claims in a favorable manner, is somewhat similar to other federal agency investigations (such as EEOC and OSHA), but the differences outnumber the similarities. This is the Department of Justice, not some smaller agency, and special rules apply. The following are a few suggestions."
