(Reports from) Annenberg
Washington Program - "In 1983 Ambassador Walter H. Annenberg founded The Annenberg Washington Program in Communications
Policy Studies as a nonprofit, neutral forum in the nation`s capital for examining pressing communications policy
issues. The Program's creation coincided with explosive advances in communications technologies and the
growing dominance of information services and products in global markets. Ambassador Annenberg wisely
predicted the need, in light of new technologies, for a place in Washington where policymakers, industry officials,
academics, the public, and the press could come together, speak frankly with each other, listen, and reach a
deeper understanding.
The Program reaches diverse audiences by publishing a monthly newsletter, distributing every Program
publication to nearly 400 college and university libraries in the United States, providing publications
electronically through the Program's World Wide Web site on the Internet, and averaging 150 print, television,
and radio appearances a month. Through these efforts, the Program encourages dialogue about
communications policy issues and improves the quality and cost-effectiveness of communications resources
and policymaking."

Disability Discrimination in Workplace - "Despite increased sensitivity to physical and mental disabilities, many of America's workers find themselves to be victims of employment discrimination due to their disability. The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law which prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of a "qualified" disability. Employees living with a physical disability have the protection of federal law, not to give them preferential treatment, but to level the playing field. With the protection of the ADA, a worker who, despite a disability, is able to perform the essential functions of his job, is entitled to reasonable accommodation from the employer, if needed. If you feel that you have been a victim of disability discrimination, it is important that you know your legal rights, and the actions you must take to prevent loss of your right to a remedy."
Disaster Mitigation for Persons with Disabilities - "The Annenberg Washington Program provides a neutral forum, open to diverse opinion, for assessing the
impact of communications technologies and public policies. This report bridges two of the Program's major
areas of inquiry: communications policy in disaster relief and mitigation, and communications and disability
policy.
As part of the examination of communications in times of disaster, the Program has worked to promote the
effective use of communications technologies and policies to inform the public, save lives, and reduce suffering
in the face of tragedy.
The Program first explored the link between communications and disaster mitigation just days after the world
learned of the disaster at Chernobyl. Since then the Program has sponsored 10 major meetings and published
six reports on the use of communications technologies and media to mitigate natural and complex disasters."

Tips for negotiating
cases with DOJ - "More and more often, in-house counsel for businesses, public entities and non-profits are receiving a call from
Washington, D.C. that they hoped would never come, announcing that the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating
their client for violations of the public access provisions (Titles II or III) of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Sometimes
the triggering event is a complaint from a customer, a member of the public, or an advocacy group. It could be a result of
audits of blueprints done by DOJ's contractors. Counsel may know or suspect the source, but in many cases the client will
not know, and DOJ will seldom say how the complaint arose.
Successfully handling ADA investigations conducted by the DOJ, and resolving these claims in a favorable manner, is
somewhat similar to other federal agency investigations (such as EEOC and OSHA), but the differences outnumber the
similarities. This is the Department of Justice, not some smaller agency, and special rules apply. The following are a few
suggestions."
Tourette Syndrome - "Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by tics -- involuntary, rapid, sudden movements
or vocalizations that occur repeatedly in the same way. Diagnostic criteria include:
Both multiple motor and one or more vocal tics present at some time, although not necessarily
simultaneously;
The occurrence of tics many times a day (usually in bouts) nearly every day or intermittently
throughout the span of more than one year;
Periodic changes in the number, frequency, type and location of the tics, and in the waxing and
waning of their severity. Symptoms can sometimes disappear for weeks or months at a time;
Onset before the age of 18."
